A new pregnancy can be one of the most exciting times for a couple. And a pregnancy with multiples? Well, that can be double or triple the excitement. But what about making the discovery that you’re expecting multiples for the second time in a row? One Maryland couple is experiencing just that.
Back in August, Nia Tolbert, a private yoga instructor and wellness coach, went for a routine ultrasound that revealed she was about to add not one, not two, but three little babies to her family — which already includes her husband Robert and their three sons, 6-year-old Shai and 2-year-old identical twins, Riley and Alexander.
“I was shocked,” Nia tells Babble.
But she quickly jumped into planning mode, coming up with a creative way to break the news to Robert, a contractor for the U.S. government. Before leaving for a weekend trip to Tampa to visit a friend, Nia left Robert a special gift: a “love note” of sonogram pictures, featuring onesies labeled 1, 2, and 3.
When she touched base with Robert by phone later that day, he shared that he had a pretty big reaction to learning the news — he literally fainted, and then had to lay down. But as you might imagine, he was also very happy. Now that the initial shock has worn off, Nia says that she and her hubby have “just been making adjustments and space for our three little blessings arriving soon the best we can. We know our home is going to be full of noise and laughter and love for quite some time!”
Nia tells Babble that she’s originally from New Orleans and Robert’s family is from Liberia. “So I’d like to say we have a pretty solid appreciation for the larger family dynamic,” she shares. “[We] always joked about having a large family, but we did not plan to have any more pregnancies after the twins. But we were in for a surprise.”
The Tolberts also share that while they weren’t actively trying for more children, they see their new pregnancy as a triple blessing, especially because their oldest son, Shai, was hoping for more siblings — and is absolutely thrilled by the news.
In the last week, the Tolberts’ story has quickly gone viral. But Nia, who is now 25 weeks along, says that she never expected their story to become so widely known and shared.
“To be honest, it’s been a little overwhelming,” she tells Babble. “We’re still just regular folks with babes to love, bills to pay, and responsibilities to tend to. But at the end of the day it has been very uplifting to see the impact we’ve had especially in our community.”
The good-natured mom also points out that the playing field will finally be even at home — because according to a recent ultrasound, all three babies are girls!
“It will bring lots of new energy into our home and take us on a completely new journey we’ve never quite experienced before- raising girls,” she says.
Nia and Robert say there isn’t much room for fear or anxiety at this stage in the game. “There’s just too much to get done and too many helping hands here to support us,” they say.
The most important thing on the Tolbert’s to-do list right now is budgeting for a new family vehicle, as they need a larger truck to fit their soon-to-be-family of eight! A fundraising page has been set up to help the family make this happen.
As this sweet (and brave!) growing family eagerly awaits the arrival of their baby girls in March, their unique story continues to reach more and more people. (In fact, they even made an appearance on the Today Show this morning.)
“We’ve been blessed beyond measure,” Nia says, “and we’ve become a blessing to others just by sharing our story.”
