For their son Daniel’s 8th birthday, Carolyn and Dan Nicastro wanted to throw him a party. They were already weary because for his past two birthdays, no one had shown up for his parties. “He would spend the day crying that he had no friends,” wrote Carolyn Nicastro. “We could not let that happen again.”
You see, Daniel has autism, which makes it even more difficult for him to interact with others and form friendships.
This year, their fears repeated themselves when no one replied to the invitations for his party. Hoping to be proactive, the Nicastros brought invitations to their local police department in Florida (their son loves the police!), but they still didn’t hold out much hope.
So you can imagine their surprise when a line of North Port Police Department cars drove up to Daniel’s party. To say the little boy’s day was made would be an understatement.
Carolyn Nicastro wrote a thank you note to the police department for the wonderful gesture. “He absolutely adores the police and calls all of you his Super Heroes,” wrote Nicastro. “He is still talking about it being the best birthday ever! … You made my son’s birthday extra special with his favorite super heroes!”
When the North Port Police Department shared the thank you note and photo from the birthday party on Facebook, the response was overwhelming, gaining 5.6k likes and over 600 comments. Many other families shared similar stories where their children had endured similar heartache as Daniel.
In response, the North Port Police Department decided they are going to “keep the love flowing” by creating a community birthday bash for Daniel and any other kids in the neighborhood who have been left out. “We want all our kids to know how special they are and see how much our community cares for them,” they shared on Facebook. The event has already gained donations and volunteers from the community, and it’s sure to be a great party to show support and love for all children.
