My daughter’s imagination is something to behold. I often see her sprinting though the house, or very intensely focusing on something that appears mundane, and wonder, what exactly is she up to?
The way she can turn the world around her into something fantastic never ceases to amaze me. What might look like trash or clutter to me, could be a vivid scene that’s playing out in her mind. Our backyard is a place where leprechauns roam, monsters await in our garage, and why sleep in a bed when you can pretend you’re a champion trampoline jumper?
When you’re young, everything is just a bit more magical.
And so I constantly have to remind myself that she and I see the world very differently (like when I want her to brush her teeth but her dolls are too busy practicing their backstroke). To get a better look inside her mind, I asked her to describe to me what she sees when she plays. We then had a designer create illustrations based on what she told me — and it is nothing short of awe-inspiring.
I see a backyard for BBQs and family gatherings:

She sees a dangerous jungle meant to be explored:

I see a kitchen where we cook pizza and chicken nuggets:

She sees a world class restaurant where she is the five-star chef:

I see a bathroom sink where we brush our teeth before bed:

She sees a swimming pool for her dolls:

I see a hallway in our home:

She sees a track meant for high-speed races:

I see a garage where we park our cars:

She sees a terrifying lair where monsters are lying in wait:

I see a fireplace meant for decoration:

She sees a stage worthy of Taylor Swift:

I see a front yard where our dog runs around:

She sees a magical place where leprechauns live:

I see our dog, Rigby, looking for a snack:

She sees a lion in need of taming during her circus show:

I see stacks of LEGO® DUPLO® bricks:

She sees the endless beauty of the New York City skyline:

I see a couch where we sit and watch TV:

She sees a ship she captains across the sea:

It has been a long time since I’ve seen the world through a child’s eyes. Thanks to my daughter, I’ve realized how important it is to remember that things in this world can be so much more than they appear.
