New parenting can be a grind, but Snapdad is making it look easy. The latest Tumblr sensation is keeping himself and other new parents entertained with his hilarious Snapchat drawings of his newborn son.
Snapchat, a popular video and photo messaging app created by a few guys at Stanford, has been amusing its users since it was first launched in 2011. For the many parents who also happen to be Snapchatters, Snapdad is a fun trip down the rabbit hole — Belgian graphic designer and “Snapdad,” Lukas Costeur, has slowly but surely been gathering a parenting fanbase after posting creatively doctored Snapchat pictures of his infant son, Felix, to his Tumblr blog. And for those who don’t tumble, Snapdad is also picking up steam on Facebook, where he cross-posts his pictures to his growing community.
There’s no disputing that Costeur’s baby is already adorable, but Felix becomes damn near irresistible with a little bit of his dad’s creative input. Using only a Nexus 5 smartphone and a Wacom Bamboo stylus, Costeur spends his limited downtime as a new dad doodling up a storm — turning cute baby pictures of his son into epic characters like Buzz Lightyear, Harry Potter, a Star Wars Jedi, Pinocchio, Zorro, and even Walter White from Breaking Bad.
If you’ve ever been a new parent sandwiched between overwhelming love and unbelievable exhaustion, then you’ll understand why moms and dads can’t get enough of Snapdad’s pics. (Just imagine falling in love, and starting a new job, and waking up for 3 AM boot camp all on the same day, and you’ll have a pretty accurate picture of what those first few weeks feel like.)
Snapdad, and other parents who have managed to keep their sense of humor while caring for a new baby, understand this better than any of us. Confused, sleep-deprived, and often hormonal new parents are told to “cherish every moment” because “it goes by too fast.” As it turns out, one of the best ways to stay in the moment — and save our sanity — is by poking a little fun at our kids.
This could explain the recent phenomenon we’ve seen of new parents “upgrading” their baby’s pictures and posting them to the Internet. In 2014, it was the year of the eyebrow, where dozens of hilariously disturbing images of babies with angry eyebrows were posted to social media. And in 2015, we’ve seen a few more parents taking it to the next level, like Snapdad and the mom who made over her baby with a glamorous makeup app earlier in the year. Another mother and graphic designer even turned her parenting jokes into profit by designing and selling her sarcastic baby onesies online.
Snapdad may be exactly what we need as we enter the new year, serving as a big reminder to lighten up and bring in the comic relief when the pressure gets too much. As Costeur explains to Babble, his clever project has not only been entertaining — it’s helped him to stay engaged with his son. Each day, he looks forward to what character he will transform Felix into next.More On
