There’s a new Instagram account on the playground that’s giving fresh meaning to the saying, “kids say the darndest things.”
Live From Snack Time is a hysterical account of memes created by a teacher who wishes to remain anonymous, made up of random quotes from her students as well as submissions from parents and other teachers.
We were lucky enough to chat with the teacher behind the Internet sensation to learn a little bit more about the funny moment that inspired the idea and why she feels it’s important to share these quotes with the world.
It all started about a year ago, she explained to Babble. She was finishing up a lesson on symmetry when one child raised his hand and said, “My butt has a line of symmetry!”
To her, it wasn’t just a funny anecdote — it was also an insight into the way children process information:
“I love how students find their own ways to break down and store information. The way they think out loud and interpret material is fascinating, real, and authentic. As a teacher I can’t solve every problem, but I make sure to validate the children’s feelings and work through their problems with them.”
Thus, Live From Snack Time was born that very night!
For those who may think this account is poking fun at kids, that couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, the teacher explained that it’s about highlighting and celebrating the curiosity of children — and she takes great pride in her role in shaping their lives.
“They come in as babies and leave my class as readers, writers, problem solvers, big kids. When they are CEOs, teachers, authors, accountants, engineers, doctors, I can say, ‘I was there when you tied your shoe for the first time. I saw your face the first time you finished a book, when you thought a Mathematician did magic tricks, when you cut the sleeves off your shirt cause you were ‘feeling hot.’”
She continues to record and share comments from her own students, who are an endless source of inspiration, and accepts submissions from readers as well.
