It’s no secret how addictive technology can be. Maybe you’ve even gone on a “digital diet,” where you put away your phone for a while in an attempt to live without the constant distraction of notifications or emails. But most likely, you’re like the other 99.9 percent of us who aren’t so highly evolved. In other words … your phone is your everything.
So imagine how horrifying it would be to realize that your phone has been totally disabled without your knowledge — for 47 years! That’s almost like a prison sentence.
Well, apparently, it happened. According to the South China Morning Post, one mom, who identified herself by her last name, Lu, recently gave her 2-year-old her iPhone to watch educational videos, only to come home and realize that her child had been pressing buttons while the phone asked for password input. Turns out, the child ended up locking her phone for … wait for it … 25 million minutes.
Like any of us would have done, she hit the Apple store right away. But as you might imagine, they told her she only had two choices: totally reset her phone, or just wait it out.
Perhaps not wanting to spend the money on a new phone, she did end up waiting it out for a couple of months, but then eventually gave in.
“I couldn’t really wait for 47 years and tell my grandchild it was your father’s mistake,” Lu reportedly told Chinese news outlet Kankanews.com.
According to the South China Morning Post, the story sparked a ton of debate on the Chinese website Kankanews.com. Naturally, a lot of people questioned why the toddler was left with the phone for so long… and more importantly, why didn’t she back up her stuff?
Regardless, now we know this is a thing. In fact, the Apple technicians told Lu that some people had their phones locked for up to 80 years this exact same way — so watch that iPhone.
Knowledge is power, people!
