The Top Baby Names of 2017 Have Been Revealed, and There Are Definitely a Few Surprises

My husband and I have welcomed three healthy babies into the world. After each pregnancy announcement, we would immediately start looking up baby names and, of course, never seem to agree on the perfect name until just before our sweet bundle of joy was ready to enter the world.

If you’re expecting a kid (and are anything like me), you probably have a running list of about six jillion names going already in your head — along with a whole lotta questions about what exactly would make the perfect name.

Should you go for something old-fashioned or trendy? Would a quirky vintage name suit your future kid or are you better off sticking with a name that’s already in your family?

Well, get ready for a ton of new names to mull over — the Social Security Administration released it’s annual top baby names list for 2017 on Friday, and there were definitely a few surprises. For example, the classic boy name Michael has dropped from the top 10 list for the first time since World War II. (Though talk about an impressive streak!) Also, Emily — a long-running favorite for girls — has gone MIA from the top 10 for the first time since 1990.

There are always a few unique names that tend to spike on the annual list despite not making the top 10, too. For girls, the name Ensley jumped from 2,426 on last year’s list all the way up to 965. Who knows, maybe we’ll be seeing Ensley appear on the most popular girl name list in the near future. For boys, the classic name Wells went from 1,419 to 915. Can you imagine two siblings named Ensley and Wells? OMG, that would be so cute! (BRB while I add that to my personal baby name list and consider having a fourth child … )

The new list also seems to reflect a popularity among classic names that have a vintage feel to them. Though honestly, they are all so sweet, I’m having a tough time figuring out which ones are my favorite …
