A UK Couple Is Looking for a New Nanny — to Live in Their Haunted House

Taking care of children comes with many challenges to one’s patience. Kids are impulsive, loud, curious, loud, demanding, and did I mention loud? Just getting kids fully clothed and fed is enough to make any human being want to pull their hair out, but what about adding in a little supernatural element to that three-ring circus? Would you want to babysit kids PLUS ghosts?

Well, if you’re brave, I might just have the job for you.

According to UK child care site, a family in the Scottish Borders recently posted a help-wanted ad looking for a nanny to watch over their two young children, ages 5 and 7. But here’s the catch: They live in a haunted house.

“We have lived in our home for nearly 10 years,” the ad explains. “We were told it was ‘haunted’ when we bought it, but kept our minds open and decided to buy the house regardless. Five nannies have left the role in the last year, each citing supernatural incidents as the reason, including strange noises, broken glass, and furniture moving.”

Uh … come again?

In my house, we have mischievous kids, but no ghosts (that I know of), so I’m totally accustomed to the moved furniture, broken stuff, and even strange noises. But for this Scottish family, the apparitions have actually caused a lot of problems.

“This has obviously been a period of great upheaval for our children,” they wrote, adding, “We haven’t personally experienced any supernatural happenings, as they have been reported only while we’ve been out of the house, but we’re happy to pay above the asking rate, and feel it’s important to be as up-front as possible to find the right person.”

If you’re reading this right now and thinking to yourself, “OK seriously, is this for real?!” I admit, I thought the same thing. But according to ABC News, it appears to be legit.

And for the brave soul who’s willing to take the job on, there is one upside: The pay isn’t too shabby. “We are offering a salary of £50,000 [$63,950] gross per annum and 28 days holiday (plus bank holidays) for the right person,” the ad states. Plus, “you will be provided with your own comfortable room with en-suite bathroom and private kitchen.” (Pretty sweet!) Get paid a full salary and not having to pay rent? Honestly, I could deal with a little bit of Casper action for that kind of compensation.

As for your other responsibilities: “Duties would include preparing breakfast, getting the children ready for school, dropping off and picking up from school and assisting after school, including helping with homework and getting them ready for bed,” the ad continues. (That doesn’t so bad, right?)

And who knows, maybe there is no ghost after all, but just lots of overly-active imaginations. After all, the family has said that they have never personally experienced any supernatural activity themselves. Better act quick, though — the busy professional couple looking for help say they’re “keen to find the perfect long-term nanny,” so if you don’t spook easily and have always had a dream of whisking your fam away to Scotland … this might just be your dream job.
