Adorable Obie

Remember the story of Obie?

He’s the 5-year-old dachshund who was rescued by a Portland resident when it was discovered that he was basically being fed to death by his elderly owners.

One of the owners’ relatives pleaded for someone to help rescue the dachshund mix and that’s just what Nora Vanatta did when she heard about the dog’s plight.

At a whopping 77 pounds, the dog named Obie by Vanatta, was on the fast track to an early death and labeled as the world’s heaviest dachshund.

Vanatta is not just an animal lover but also a vet tech and she immediately placed Obie on a weight loss regimen. The program includes hydrotherapy and a low calorie diet. When Doxie is healthy enough to exercise more, he will start using a treadmill.

Now, Vanatta has started a Facebook page called Biggest Loser, Obie Edition in which she updates fans about Obie’s progress:

“He is on a special diet to lose the weight and get back to being a happy dog. We think that he should weigh about 30 to 40 pounds. I feel tremendously blessed to be involved in his rehabilitation and I am amazed at the outpouring of love and support that I have received. I will be setting up a pay pal account to accept donations for his continued care. Thank you to those who have already donated your services. Please follow us on our journey as this sweet boy starts his new life.”
