7 Ways He Should Not React to the News That You’re Pregnant

A father-to-be looking at a positive pregnancy test with undeniable happinessI can still remember it like it was yesterday, the day I told the Husband that I was pregnant with our first child. We had been trying for a few months and had a few losses, but this pregnancy instantly felt different.

I was so excited to share the news with him over 7 years ago. I was working when I took the pregnancy test and when I arrived home, he was asleep (I worked overnight shifts somewhere) so I had to wait until he woke up.

His reaction was perfect! He had the biggest smile, hugged me and told me he loved me. I remember it to this day and I have a feeling many women have this moment stick in their brain forever. While the spontaneity is likely out of the question this time around if we get pregnant and I tell him the news (since we’ve been trying for a while and now need to use fertility drugs), but nonetheless, I am sure he will react perfectly again.

While I was happy with the way that my husband responded to the news, there are some who have a partner who perhaps had a less-than-ideal reaction to the double pink lines.

  • Go Calling 1 of 7
If he's reacting to the news by being so excited that he goes and updates his Facebook status, tweets the news and calls everyone he knows, that's probably not the best reaction. While I believe the news can be shared at any moment, some people prefer things to be private for a little bit.

  • Running 2 of 7
If his first reaction is to head for the nearest door or if he's looking for a quick exit, that's a terrible first reaction. He will certainly have a lot of making up to do for that one.

  • Treating You Differently 3 of 7
Being pregnant is awesome and there may be times that you have to modify some things, but if your partner reacts by putting on his "kid gloves" that's not the best way to react to your baby momma.

  • Asking Who 4 of 7
If the first thing out of his mouth happens to be, "Is it mine?!" you may want to rethink things with this guy. I get that it could be a shock, but that's not a good way to react to the news coming from the future mother of your child.

  • Commenting On Weight 5 of 7
He really shouldn't say something like, "Oh, I thought you had gained a few pounds," unless he wants the silent treatment for a while.

  • Freaking Out 6 of 7
It's a big deal, but he really shouldn't say, "I am not ready!" Or you should at least get a hug first, right?

  • Planning Without You 7 of 7
He shouldn't say something like, "Awesome, I will start planning our home waterbirth!" It's great that he is excited and happy, but it also sounds like he likes to be in charge and should talk to you about your plans first.
