Baby Shower For 4th Child? What Are The Rules?

I’ve never been the conventional type, and I know we can all do whatever works for us. But I’m wondering – this is my 4th child, is a baby shower just bad form?

I know friends and family will want to celebrate this upcoming wee one with me, since this is our miracle baby after our loss. And I actually do NEED things this time – even though we aren’t finding out the gender, clothes in any color are in short supply for this baby.  We need a few other essentials, too. But having a shower at this point in family-making feels a little silly. Doesn’t it?

Perhaps this needs to be more of a “celebrate mom” shower? A day to celebrate the miracle without all the gifts, and just have fun together at a spa or something?  Or should I thumb my nose at Ms. Manners and let everyone throw me a shower? I have to admit, I’m always one for a celebration, and would love a cake like any one of these 10 coolest baby shower cakes. Because cake = my happy place.

But what will those invited think?  What would you do?
