Registering for baby gifts isn’t as fun as it initially seems. The choices! The contradictory opinions! The complete cluelessness! While you can usually find advice on what works, what doesn’t and what you absolutely need, there’s one item that is universally hard to decide on: the baby book.
Because, really, this is a future gift for your child. An heirloom to be passed down and admired, which he or she will probably keep forever. You also have to remember that it will symbolize your baby’s infancy in a way, holding all of the memories and milestones that you’ll refer back to and admire. So while you want the safest pair of nail clippers and the most effective breast pump, you really just need to love your baby book — and love is a hard thing to pinpoint.
So in an effort to help you on your search, we compiled our favorite baby books for different types of moms:
For the non-traditional mom:
One of the most beautiful baby books we’ve seen (and at only $9.32 — a bargain!), The First 1,000 Days is more of a reflective, journal-like book with unique questions and lots of blank space, rather than the typical fill-in-the-blank structure. And it’s also one of the few options that doesn’t have the typical “mommy” and “daddy” references — perfect for single, gay or otherwise untraditional families.
For the organized mom:
Not only can you record all of your baby’s milestones and memories, but you can also organize your baby’s artwork, health records and important documents in this All About Baby Journal ($25). And the three-ring binder makes it so that you can keep growing it bigger than the typical baby book.
For the on-the-go/tech-loving mom:
Let’s face it: You already know you’re the type to be a bit forgetful about updating a baby book — but your iPhone? Well that’s always on you. With the Emmbook baby book app ($5), you can jot down your baby’s first steps at the park, first tooth at the doctor’s office and first words at Grandma’s house. Find out more at ohdeedoh.
For the artistic mom:
For the luxe mom:
Gorgeous, luxurious and modern, this Binth Baby Book ($110 at Serena + Lily) features 52 screen-printed pages of memories, milestones and photos. If you’re looking for a truly special heirloom, here it is.
