Comedian Jim Gaffigan's Hilarious Home Birth Riff on Late Night

"A midwife was there because we believe in witchcraft."

In this Late Night clip stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan tells David Letterman about his wife’s five home births. It provides a hysterical counterpoint to the stereotype of the sanctimonious home birth story:

“People are like, ‘Oooooh, you had your baby at home. We were going to do that but WE WANTED OUR BABY TO LIVE.”

The topic is so very fraught, it’s ripe for humor. And Gaffigan nails it.

On another occasion, Gaffigan joked about home birth: “That means you take hundreds of years of medical knowledge … and you through it away.”

This clip goes into my file of funny home birth riffs, along with this brilliant digital comic strip.
