Couple Asks The Internet to Name Their BabyLauren Jimeson
Our son is due any day now and we still have no idea what we are going to call him. Technically, he has a name that is going on his birth certificate (he will be the fifth generation with my husband’s name), yet my husband and I can’t agree on a good nickname.
Like most couples struggling for a name, we went to our friends and family to ask for their opinions and input on the nickname dilemma. They gave us wonderful advice and suggestions for what might fit our son and family the best. We went to them because we trust their opinions and know that ultimately they want what is best for us.
A couple in Canada went another way. Rather than going to people they know to solicit advice, they are asking complete strangers to name their baby.
Stephen McLaughlin and his wife are expecting a daughter on April 2, 2014 and want you to help name her. McLaughlin, who works as a software developer, told CTVNews.ca that the idea just came to him. “I came home one day and was talking to my wife about naming our daughter and said “You know, I should ask the Internet, because that’s what I do for a living.'”
With his idea in mind he set up a website, NameMyDaughter.com, that allows you to vote and suggest on first and middle names for their daughter. He does have a disclaimer posted that ultimately the couple will get the final approval and that inappropriate names will be removed from the site.
It looks like the disclaimer is a good idea, because as of right now the name getting the most votes is “Cthulhu All-Spark McLaughlin.” Rounding out the top five for first names are Amelia, Charlotte, Megatron, and Olivia. The middle name top five includes Mae, Rose, Of-The-Sea and Doge.
To my surprise, the Internet is much nicer than I thought they would be. Although the current name is pretty awful in my opinion, there are many choices on the list that would make beautiful names. Now it’s just a waiting game to see what the Internet decides and if, ultimately, the couple decides to go with that name. Want to vote on or suggest a name for the couple’s daughter?
