It's Either the Christmas Card or the Birth Announcement

In past holiday seasons, one of the first things I’ve done after the Thanksgiving turkey coma has finally worn off is decide which Holiday cards to order. Then I cross my fingers and attempt to take a halfway decent family photo for the front of that same card.

I spend what feels like hours researching card designs, comparing prices, and updating my recipient spreadsheet from the previous year.

My goal is typically to have the cards ordered, properly addressed and sent out in the snail mail by the second week in December. Honestly, I love getting Christmas cards, and I love sending them out as well.

This year, being due two weeks after Christmas, I’m considering not doing holiday cards this year and instead just doing a combined birth announcement/end of year family card sometime at the end of January.

To me, it just doesn’t make sense financially to do Christmas cards now, and then a month or two later send the exact same group of people birth announcements.

But then again, I could argue that these are two completely separate events, exclusive of each other, and that I should start this kids life out right by not instantly grouping his birth with the holiday season. Because really, I have the rest of his life to combine his birthday presents with his Christmas presents, right? (kidding, I will never do that, not ever.)

So what do you think? Should I combine the birth announcement and holiday card into one mailing, or keep them separate?
