Locker room etiquette is a funny topic – people usually have a strong opinion about it. “Heck yes, I get naked!” or “I hide in the changing room!” I’m more middle-of-the-road.
I’ve never flaunted my nudity in the locker room at the gym (although the old ladies who chat with their friends while in the buff make me laugh). I always opted to turn my back to the group or change my top and then my bottom. But, at the same time, I think hiding in the dressing room is overkill – we’re all women, we all know what boobies look like, and in this age of Photoshopped perfection, isn’t it good to be proud of having a real body that shows age, experience, change, and strength?
Now that I’m pregnant, my views on locker room nudity are evolving – or I’m at least being forced to rethink them. It’s not as easy to get in and out of my clothes with the growing bump, and I end up flashing the other ladies a bit more than they’d probably like to see. I went through a few days of feeling embarrassed to be naked in the locker room, but then I realized – why? Everyone here is a woman. Most people in here have been or will eventually be pregnant. What do I have to hide?
So while I’m still not blow-drying my hair topless (that’s always been a bit much for me!), I’m not changing in a bathroom stall. I’m trying to embrace every little bit of what makes me… me. Even if it’s stretched and veiny and swollen.
Do you still get naked in the locker room?
