11 End-of-Summer Date Ideas

Summer is winding down, and most of our minds as parents have already made the transition to thinking it’s fall. In some places, kids are already back in school. Me? I feel like I need one last summer date night. I’m not ready to give up the sunshine just yet.

I know Pinterest and the likes are ablaze with back-to-school ideas: Creative lunches! Back-to-school parties! First-day pictures made easy! All I can think about is how to fit in one last summertime experience for me. With my husband. As adults.

And the fact that I just had a baby and can finally indulge in at least one alcoholic beverage again has nothing to do with it, I assure you.

Here are my top 11 end-of-summer date ideas.

1. All-day beach trip

I say all day, because the best part of this date comes at the end, when you’re all sun-kissed and happy and you can grab some hot chocolates and snuggle on the beach as the sun goes down.

2. Visit a smokehouse for dinner

It has to be authentic, people. Nothing says true love like smoked meat.

3. School shopping without the kids

Because, when it comes right down to it, we’re pathetic like that.

4. Drive-in movie

You can make this as romantic as you’d like, but my vote goes for the chocolate-covered raisins. I’m just sayin’….

5. Winery tour

The sweeping landscapes, the end-of-summer sunset brilliance, the free wine … it doesn’t really get much better than that, does it?

6. Camping

Think a few add-ins, like canoeing or a bicycle built for two.

7. Star-gazing

One of the best dates my husband and I ever had was an end-of-the-summer at-home date night. We spread out some blankets on the back deck, opened a bottle of wine, and just spent some time watching the night sky and trying not to fall asleep. #parentalromance

8. Wine & canvas

I’ve been dying to try one of those studios that offer an art lesson and wine to turn you into an artist. Imagine sitting side-by-side, creating masterpieces together. Or just laughing at how horrible you both are at painting.

 9. Waterfront dinner

If a beach trip isn’t in your future, at least try to get away to soak up the last of summer by the water for some fine dining. The views will be enticing, if you catch my drift…

10. Downtown stroll

There’s something about walking down the quaint Main Street, hand-in-hand, or hand-around-an-ice-cream cone, isn’t there? Maybe it’s because it’s the quintessential date montage in every movie ever made, but it’s still a fun date night idea to try before summer closes down.

11. Farmers’ market

If you haven’t hit up your local farmers’ market yet this summer, now’s the time to do so! The harvested food is plentiful and you can load up on sweet corn, veggies, and maybe even an early watermelon if you’re lucky. Fresh food = love.

How will you soak up the end of summer with your partner?
