Elderly Couple Poses as Up Characters for Anniversary

To be married for over six decades isn’t simply a rarity in this modern age of love, when marriages often fizzle out within a decade or so, but it is also a lovely little testament to the fact that it is entirely possible to find your true soul mate in this world.

And, further still, to remain with them until the day one of you dies.

Funnily enough, one of my absolute favorite depictions of the enduring power of a serious love affair is the one between Carl and Ellie, two incredibly memorable characters from the Disney Pixar film, Up. Drawn together at a young age by a mutual love of world travel and adventure, the film (which I have watched with my kids, I dunno, 8 or 9 times/alone 5 or 6 … and which you need to see even if you don’t have kids) has this one fantastic scene where we watch, in retrospect, the unfolding story of two young people with awesome spirits and minds falling in love and staying in love across the span of decades.

Anyway, I won’t give anything away.

The other day my wife sent me a link to a Huffington Post piece about a bunch of photographs that have surfaced recently of a couple named Dorothy and Donald Lutz who have been married for six decades now, and the photos immediately made me fairly giddy. Here, in real life flesh and blood, were a couple dressed up exactly like Carl and Ellie from the movie! I was blown away; such a fantastic idea, so cleverly planned and played out.

Plus, the fact that they posed for the photographer, Cambria Grace, in honor of their 61st wedding anniversary, well, that made the pictures even more unique and moving, I tend to think.

So try not to forget that no matter how hard things get sometimes, true love can last a lifetime.

And it often does.
