If you ask me, some of the best stories — I mean the ones that are worth telling over and over and over again — involve things going hilariously wrong when you least expect them to. Just ask 25-year-old Andrew Wright, who got epically punked by his lovely bride-to-be last month when she gave him a surprise he definitely wasn’t expecting.
On August 4, in Spencer, Indiana, Wright was preparing to see his lovely bride, 24-year-old Nicole Smith, for the first time in her wedding dress. The couple had opted for a “first look” photo shoot, when a photographer captures the exact moment a groom sees his bride on their wedding day. It’s a tradition that’s intended to create an intimate and romantic moment between the soon-to-be newlyweds. But it just so happened that Smith had a pretty funny prank up her sleeve.
Unbeknownst to her groom, Smith had convinced his best man, 24 year-old Kye Stachowski, to don a wedding dress and switch places with her. So, as Wright had his back turned, Kye slowing approached him while clutching a bouquet. That’s when Wright turned around and … well, I’m sure you can guess what happened next.
Smith says she was inspired by a similar prank she saw online one day while putting off studying for her final exam.
“I messaged his best man knowing that he would love to do it,” Smith tells Babble, “and knowing that my Matron of Honor had a wedding dress she wasn’t using.”
When Wright first saw Stachowski wearing a white dress and holding flowers, he admits he was confused. But it didn’t take long for him to burst out laughing.
“When my husband finds something genuinely funny, he always bends over laughing while grabbing his stomach,” Smith tells Babble. “And that’s exactly what he did. Kye’s girlfriend Linda and I were watching from the loft inside the barn where I was getting ready. It was the perfect view to see everything while still staying hidden!”
According to TODAY, wedding photographer Belinda Russell was also in on the joke, and even gave some fake instructions to Stachowski as he approached Wright from behind. As far as Wright was concerned, the photographer was telling his bride how pretty she looked and to “drop your shoulder,” which made the reveal just that much funnier.
“I talked to her less than a few days before the wedding about it and she was definitely game to give it a shot,” says Smith. “She was so great at acting like Kye was me so that Andrew wouldn’t have a clue that Kye was walking behind him. It definitely helped make the photos turn out great!”
It certainly did.
The couple, who first met in 8th grade, has always “thrived on being goofy and sarcastic,” according to Smith; and I don’t know about you, but I have a hunch that will come in handy in the years of marriage they have ahead of them.
