The sunset was picture perfect on the evening of his clients’ wedding photo shoot — but Australian photographer James Day still wasn’t satisfied.
“Tonight I was photographing Adrian & Roslyn,” Day posted later on Facebook. “I was setting up those grand sunset scenes … I love those kinda shots … but tonight that just didn’t seem enough.”
So he trusted his instincts and did something unconventional. The result was an image that immediately went viral with over 240,000 likes and 56,000 shares on Facebook.
Said Day on his page, “I scrapped everything I knew and I walked up to them and said, ‘Guys, stop posing. Just enjoy your first sunset together as husband and wife.’”
Watching them hold each other, he was moved. “It was so much more beautiful than anything I could ever set up,” he said.
But the pivotal moment was when he asked them this question:
“I said to Adrian, ‘I have a question for you, but I want you to tell the answer to Roslyn and not me … Out of the billions of people on the planet, you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with Roslyn. Can you tell her why?’”
And that’s when he got this shot.
Said Day in his post, “In a matter of moments I could start seeing Roslyn’s eyes glisten, then the most beautiful tears streamed down her face. Then I found myself crying.”
Naturally, comments were ablaze on the post. Because honestly, who can look at that without tearing up? The raw emotion he captured speaks to the kind of love that so many people look for in their lives.
And kudos to Day for breaking the rules and feeling into the moment. While textbook sunset photos are always beautiful, an intimate shot like this truly captures what it feels like to be loved.
Which leads to the one thing people seem to want to know the most: What did the groom say?
No word on that, unfortunately. Perhaps some questions are best left unanswered.
