When you are trying to find the right look for your new body, try to avoid these 25 fashion mistakes that can be surprisingly unflattering. For example, maxi dresses may be drawing attention to all the wrong parts, while capris can make your legs seem shorter than they actually are. 25 Fashion Mistakes Moms Make:
1. Maxi Dress
Even though they are comfortable, the excess fabric on a maxi dress may draw some unwanted attention on a post-baby pooch.
2. Low Rise Jeans
Jeans below your waistline aren’t super forgiving, especially when you’re still working on getting your body back to pre-pregnancy shape. Instead, try higher-waisted jeans, which give your stomach more support to help suck in that post-baby belly flab.
3. Horizontal Stripes
Don’t get us wrong; we love horizontal stripes. But they don’t always accentuate the best areas and can actually make your stomach and butt appear wider than they really are.
4. Boy Shorts
The way boy shorts are cut gives them the tendency to squeeze flab out of the sides of your hips.
5. White Leggings
While black is slimming, white does the opposite. White leggings are likely to accentuate every little thing about your legs — so if you’re not in love with them just yet, we’d suggest opting for darker jeans or pants.
6. Cargo Shorts
Try to avoid cargo shorts with bulky pockets, which can make your hips and legs look larger, in favor of shorts with simpler, sleeker pockets.
7. Capri Pants
Since they cut above the ankle, capri pants can visually shorten your legs, making them appear stocky.
8. Ruffle Top
Ruffles can be so cute, but depending on where they’re placed, they can actually make you seem to “stick out” further than you do naturally.
9. Sweater on Waist
While convenient, tying a sweater around your waist can add inches to that part of your body (butt included!).
Pleats can make your skirt or dress stick out further than your body, making you appear bigger.
11. Empire Waist
An empire waist dress can gather the fabric over your stomach, and give you more of a belly.
12. Choker Necklace
A choker necklace has the effect of making your neck look short, which can in turn make your face seem fuller, and even give the illusion of a double chin (yikes!).
Short-alls aren’t exactly the most flattering look all around. They can make your torso and legs appear shorter and “stumpy” — even when they’re not.
A pinafore can make you look boxy. It also lets the fabric hang in an unflattering way around post-baby flab, not really doing much to enhance or play up your natural shape.
15. Ankle Strap Shoes
Unless your legs are twigs, an ankle strap can give them a short-and-stumpy look, since they visually cut you before your leg naturally ends.
16. Linen Pant
Traditionally sold in a wide-leg fit, linen pants don’t do much for the shape of your legs and tend to make you look older too.
17. Leggings as Pants
Leggings are too sheer and clingy to be worn as pants. Try pairing them with a longer shirt or tunic to cover your behind.
18. Whale Tail
Wearing pants below your waistline makes you susceptible to public displays of underwear when you bend over, otherwise known as “whale tail.”
19. Muffin Top
Try to wear jeans that are the right size and the right placement on your hip to avoid that post-baby weight from spilling out the sides.
20. Tight Jeans
Squeezing into your too-tight pre-pregnancy jeans will be just as uncomfortable as it is unflattering. Try to save them for when you’re closer to your weight before baby.
21. Graphic Tee
T-shirts tend to hug love handles. Add a graphic and they become even more unflattering.
22. Large Print
Stay away from large patterns, which can overpower your entire look and make you appear larger yourself. Instead opt for small prints that will disguise flabby areas but not overwhelm your frame.
23. Embellished Pockets
Embellished pockets have the effect of making your butt look bigger and drawing attention to it.
24. Tight Dress
A fitted dress that doesn’t fit you quite right won’t have the effect you’re looking for. Opt for an A-line one that flatters your hips and disguises the flab.
25. Skirted Swimsuit
A skirted swimsuit doesn’t hide your hips like one may think; it actually makes them look bigger.
