When I became a mom, four-and-a-half years ago, I vowed to never carry a diaper bag. I saw other moms carrying these gigantic, horrendous bags with exterior pockets with bottles sticking out and covered in the worst prints that were supposed to look “motherly” or “childish” (I don’t know which) and swore never to be that mom. Why couldn’t I just carry a normal bag and still look cute?
But it turns out, as a mother with small children, all those extra pockets are kind of necessary for toting around the amount of items a newborn baby needs when you leave the house. A regular purse with one main section, a tiny zippered pocket, and a phone pocket just doesn’t cut it for holding diapers, wipes, burp cloths, bottles, toys, pacifiers … and the list goes on. Luckily for all of us, several designers thought the same thing and came out with some gorgeous bags that look completely chic and sophisticated, but secretly have a thousand pockets that will fit all your baby items. Can I get a hallelujah?
Let me share three of my favorite diaper bags that I own — and the best part? You’d never know they’re actually a diaper bag! I take them with me all the time to date night, girls’ night, and anywhere with or without my kids!
1. Metallic Diaper Bag
Does it get any more chic than a metallic bag? I adore this one from Lily Jade because not only does it have a ton of pockets on the inside, it also has a fully removable insert with about 20 more pockets. I also love the structure of this bag, since many of my regular bags don’t hold their shape very well so things easily get lost inside. It has two regular handles, and then a long shoulder strap (which I like best), so you can carry it across your chest or over one shoulder.
2. Black Hobo Diaper Bag
Petunia Pickle Bottom was one of the original diaper bag companies, and although their early stuff was a little more obviously “diaper bag”-looking for my taste, their more recent collection is so chic and completely perfect for any mom looking for a non-traditional diaper bag. I recently ordered their Halifax Hobo in black from their new cake collection, and it’s absolutely my new favorite bag. It definitely has the highest price point, but it’s incredibly well made and with its classic style, I plan to use it for years. It’s also a great size — big enough for all the things you need for a newborn, but small enough to continue using as your kids grow up.
3. Brown Leather Diaper Bag
And finally, my beloved Lily Jade Madeline bag. I’ve had this bag for a few years now and it’s the best bag I’ve ever owned. The leather is soft and dreamy, it has a full insert just like the rest of the Lily Jade’s bags, it’s the perfect slouchy shape (that makes it look like a casual shoulder bag), and it converts from a regular bag to a shoulder bag to a backpack. I’ve taken this bag on every trip and will use it long after I don’t need a diaper bag for my kids. The inside is red and made of a soft washable material, and it also comes with a changing pad and baby bag organizer. Bonus: It comes in black, too!
