5 Types of Tops Every Woman Should Have in Her Closet

Since a new year is all about fresh starts, this month on Babble we’re talking about wardrobe essentials. It’s the perfect time of year to pull out everything in your closet and weed through it, and each of these guides will give you a clear idea of what should stay and what should go. I’ve covered shoes, outwear, skirts and pants, and purses, so today let’s talk about tops!

Of course shirts are the items you probably own the very most of, and that’s certainly the case for me. So I’m going to break them down into five basic categories of tops. This will give you a clear idea of what shirts will be the most versatile and functional, and then from there you can choose pieces in those categories that fit your personal style. Ready? Here we go.

1. Button-Ups

I used to think button-ups were too professional-looking for a regular mom like me, but they’re really a staple that every woman needs to have in her closet. They come in all kinds of colors and materials, but a classic white button-up and a chambray (lightweight denim) button-up are really the only two you need. They are great for layering under a sweater, wearing open over a dress, tied at the waist, tucked into a skirt, or just by themselves with a pair of jeans. A white button-up with jeans is such a classic look for any age or style — so go get yourself one already.

This classic white button-up is only $20 at Old Navy, and this chambray one is on sale for $16.97 at Old Navy, too!

2. Blouses

Although button-ups are also considered blouses, I’m talking about other kinds of dressier tops. They’re definitely a category of their own. These are the shirts I own the very most of and are essential for your closet. They can come in a million different varieties and styles, so this is where you can have fun and choose pieces that fit your personality. Choose a variety of blouses — loose and flowy, short-sleeved, long-sleeved, peplum, tunic, etc. These are the best pieces for dressing down with a pair of sandals and boyfriend jeans, or dressing up with a pair of skinny jeans and heels for date night.

This gorgeous white crocheted blouse from LOFT is $59.50, and J.Crew Factory has a ton of beautiful tops

3. T-Shirts

Who can live without T-shirts? Not I! They are staples for casual wear, but can also be dressed up with a blazer and heels or paired with a pencil skirt. They’re my favorite. Make sure your closet has at least one solid colored one (my favorites are gray, navy, and white), and you should probably throw a graphic tee into the mix cause they make everything better.

Gap has some great basic T-shirts in neutral colors on sale for only $14, and J.Crew is my favorite place for cute graphic tees. I love this one on sale for only $24.99!

4. Sweaters

You probably already know this, but sweaters come in all varieties, too. Over-sized, cropped, cable knit, furry, long-sleeved, short-sleeved, and the list goes on. Choose your favorite styles, and buy one of each. They are great for layering over a dress, wearing with a skirt or jeans, or layering over a button-up or a long blouse. I also love them with leather leggings for a pretty mix of edgy and soft.

These honeycomb sweaters from Old Navy are on sale for $30 and are perfect for layering!

5. Layering Pieces

These are the completer pieces that every woman also needs in her closet. Cardigans and blazers are my two top choices (oh, and vests, but I covered those in outwear). I love the look of a blazer thrown over a graphic tee, or a boyfriend cardigan over a flowy blouse. Choose a navy or black blazer that will go with everything and whatever style of cardigan you prefer. I like a long boyfriend cardigan with fitted sleeves, personally.

This classic navy blazer is on sale for $35 from Old Navy, and this comfy cardigan from Target is only $29.99.

So, does your closet have all 5 of these essentials??
