Kate Middleton has been in the public eye for less than a decade, but she’s already cemented her place as a fashion icon. The Duchess of Cambridge is known for her pulled together but not overly styled looks. Let’s be honest: Kate could look gorgeous in a potato sack, and her simple dresses and limited accessories could look boring on someone else.
Part of Kate’s je ne sais quoi is in the way she holds herself and her inner beauty. That kind of simplicity is hard to imitate. When reading these tips, remember it isn’t about imitation, it’s about inspiration.
Follow our seven easy tips for getting Kate Middleton’s classic style, and while you might not be mistaken for a princess, we promise you’ll feel beautiful, confident, and regal.
1. Show Your Colors
Kate’s color palate consists of a lot of blue; from baby blue to navy, she knows she looks great in this hue. She also wears pops of solid red, and cream, just like the Union Jack. Not all of her colors are from the British flag, though; you’ll also see her in pale yellow, pastel pink, grays, black, and greens.
2. Be Classy
When she’s on England’s clock, she’s ready for anything. Her skirts are always close to the knee or below, and she wears a lot of three-quarter length and long sleeves. I guess when you’re one of the most photographed ambassadors for your country, you have to look classy.
3. Look for Timeless Items
Kate isn’t a trend follower. She isn’t looking in magazines to find out what she should wear next. She invests in items that are here for the long haul: a classic trench, simple black and nude pumps with a little bit of a lift, suit dresses and solid colored sheath dresses, but nothing too drastic.
4. Be Consistent
Even when Kate is casual, she sticks to her specific fashion vision. Her casual looks are always pulled together and classic. Even if Kate can’t be your best friend, stripes can be. They’re classic and will be with you throughout your whole life.
5. Make Sure the Fit Is Perfect
If you’re a princess you have top designers making you custom pieces for your exact body shape. If you’re not, you’ll have to put the time in to make sure your items are fitting perfectly. You can start by trying on everything you buy and only buying things that are already in good shape. Anything that is baggy in places or too long can be taken to a tailor and fixed for a small price.
6. Cinch at the Waist
Kate knows her assets and works with them. If you have a small waist like she does, make sure you’re featuring it. Bring it to focus with a belt and wear items that are fitted in the waist area. She doesn’t usually wear a lot of shift dresses or flowy shirts (unless she’s pregnant …). If your waist isn’t your favorite part of your body, look for what is and feature that.
7. Coordinate the Family
If Kate’s wearing a certain color dress, William is wearing a matching or coordinating tie. With baby George in the mix, he’s also seen wearing similar hues. Even if your family isn’t getting dressed for a press event, I bet you’re taking a lot of pictures in your everyday life. Thinking about everyone’s outfit can give those pictures an added focal point.
