4 Comfy Yet Stylish Maternity Pieces That Are Worth the Investment

When I was pregnant for the very first time, I had this idea in my head that there were two types of maternity styles. There were the super fashionable moms-to-be who sacrificed comfort for style by wearing formfitting dresses and impractical heels. And there were the yoga pant-wearing mamas-to-be who sacrificed style for comfort, wearing nothing but leisurewear. I was dead set on being the first type, spending this special time in my life looking and feeling my best so that I could feel confident in my changing body.

But, as any mom knows, there comes a certain point when all your fashion ideals take a backseat to comfort. Toward the end, all of my stretchiest comfy clothes slowly won out over the heels. The good news? I actually found the sweet spot of maternity style and learned that high heels and yoga pants weren’t the only options. It really is possible to strike a balance when dressing your bump.

To prove it, I recruited my adorably pregnant sister-in-law and outfitted her in a few great maternity staples from Kohl’s to show you how to build looks that will take you through the next nine months in comfort and style.

1. Jeggings are your best friend.

While jeans probably sound like the most uncomfortable choice for your growing belly, jeggings are an entirely different story. They look structured but feel oh so comfy. Opt for a full belly panel and stretch fabric to ensure optimal comfort, while choosing a skinny cut and dark wash to give a stylish, put-together look.

The trick to elevating a basic jeans look is to pair them with a cute top and fun shoes. An empire waist shirt emphasizes your smallest area, so it’s super flattering to a growing bump. As for shoes, I opted for a goes-with-everything neutral, peep-toe bootie with a sturdy heel. Top it off with a cozy cardigan for added warmth during the fall or winter months.

2. Give the overalls trend a try.

Just because you’re pregnant doesn’t mean new trends are off-limits, and overalls can actually be quite comfortable! For instance, this pair has buttons on the side that offer the option to “size up”; plus, the straps can be extended to better fit your growing belly. Overalls are also a surprisingly flattering choice for a mama-to-be as the waist accentuates a pregnant tummy perfectly.

Because overalls offer a bold enough statement on their own, the “less is more” approach comes into play. Pair them with a formfitting top and a pair of crisp, white tennis shoes. The look is simple but stylish, and perfectly comfortable for growing curves.

3. Free your belly with a (properly fitting) swing dress.

While maternity pants can offer plenty of comfort, sometimes you just want to let your belly be free. Enter: The swing dress. The comfortable ribbed fabric is flattering and will give your belly room to breathe. But as a word of caution, swing dresses can quickly veer into circus tent territory if too large, so be sure to purchase the appropriate size to perfectly showcase your bump.

As an added measure to ensure a flattering silhouette, throw on a comfy cardigan that will draw the eye in toward your belly. Throw on some cute flats, and you’ll have an outfit that looks super chic but feels like you’re wearing pajamas.

4. Make those leggings look intentional.

Let’s be honest, when it comes to the wardrobe of a mama-to-be, leggings are the real MVP. They’re a perfect, everyday option that will easily accommodate a growing belly — all while providing comfort and showing off those great gams! They get a bad rap, but when done right leggings can put out a cool, sporty vibe that looks pulled together.

There are a few ways to create an intentional leggings look. One tip is to pair them with a flattering, fitted top. This T-shirt is great since it’s long enough to offer coverage and the side ruching provides extra stretch and comfort for your growing babe. I would also add an extra element to tie it all together — like a striped tee tied around the waist to add more interest and emphasize the bump. Then add a pair of sleek, black sneakers to polish off the look.
