4 Ways to Style Distressed Jeans

I’ve been talking about jeans this month, and about who can wear each style, how to wear them, and where to buy them. Today we’ve reached the last style of jean — distressed. This is not exactly the same as the other posts, because jeans of any style can be distressed. Typically boyfriend and skinny jeans are the ones that get distressed, so check first to see if you should be wearing those styles with your body type, and then we can talk about distressed ones.

Pretty much every fashion book you’ll ever read will tell you that a pair of dark wash jeans is an essential in your closet. I totally agree. Get the basics first. But once you have a few good pairs of those jeans, try a pair of distressed jeans. They’re a fun alternative to the classic blue jean, and can be worn so many fun ways.

Here are a few different ways to style them:

1. Keep it Feminine.

I love the contrast between a very sleek piece and a distressed piece, so try some bright lipstick, a big statement necklace, a lace top, or a pair of stilettos. The jeans dress down the feminine piece, and the feminine piece dresses up the jeans. They are perfectly complimentary. This is a great look for date night, out with your girlfriends, or a semi-casual party.

2. Go for the whole look.

It’s completely the opposite from the look above, but it’s fun sometimes to wear something completely casual. Throw on an oversized tee or sweater, some simple sandals, boots, or flats, and a baseball cap. They’ll perfectly compliment your distressed jeans. To keep the look from being too masculine, thrown on a pretty pendant necklace and some lipgloss.

3. Add some structure.

Whether it be with a blazer, structured jacket, button up, or a structured purse, a more mature piece paired with your jeans will add some nice contrast and create a cool look, similar to the heels option above.

4. Let them do the talking.

For those super distressed jeans, keep the rest of your outfit neutral so parts of your look aren’t competing against each other. No patterned tops or big fancy jewelry… just keep your other pieces simple and neutral so your jeans stand out.

And now, if you’re looking for a few good options, here are a few recommendations!

My favorite pair of distressed jeans I own are my “Jessica Low Rise Leggings” from Dittos. They are insanely comfortable and not TOO distressed. (They’re the ones I’m wearing in the top photo with the black blazer.)

I also own this pair from Gap and love the lighter colored wash. Plus, the distressed areas are lined so you don’t see your thigh right through the rips.

Another great pair, from Old Navy that only has a little bit of distressing.

Not exactly my style, but if you’re looking for a super distressed pair, here’s an option from Forever 21.

Or if you’re looking to do it with an old pair of jeans you already own (or thrifted!), try this easy tutorial.
