I Let My Toddler Style Herself (and She May Be Better Than I Am!)

In addition to mothering and writing, I also sometimes do work as a freelance wardrobe stylist. I did it a lot more before having kids, because the hours and unpredictability of shoots aren’t always very conducive to motherhood, but I still get my fill of styling when it comes to my little ones. Putting together tiny outfits for them is one of my favorite pastimes — I just can’t resist kids clothes!

Lately my three-year-old daughter has been really interested in putting together outfits herself. She’s particularly focused on matching and all the little details of an ensemble and as such I thought it would be fun to have her put together some looks to share. It was a lot of fun seeing what she thought up and how excited she was about it. She even wanted to lay everything out for the photos! Here’s what she came up with …

OUTFIT #1: Matchy match

As a lover of all things black, this look is my favorite of the bunch. I like to think it was inspired by my closet full of neutrals. When I asked her if she wanted to add any color, her response was, “No, Mom. Black matches black.” A girl after my own heart.

OUTFIT #2: A Day at the Beach

“Mom, this would be a good outfit for Hawaii. I need a hat and flip flops, because it’s so sunny!”

Can’t argue with that logic!

OUTFIT #3: Stripes at the Park

This outfit would be a good everyday outfit. Cute, but still good for play. I asked my little one where she might wear this outfit and she said, “I could wear this to the park!”

OUTFIT #4: Workout Clothes

If ever we are doing anything even remotely active, or going to a fitness class (even though she’ll just be hanging out in childcare), my girl absolutely must wear workout clothes. And all-pink is just a given.

OUTFIT #5: Daddy Daughter Date

I asked what a good outfit might be for a date with her daddy and this is what my girl came up with. She chose the clutch from my closet and apparently the lace-cape-turned-apron tied the entire ensemble together.

OUTFIT #6: Friend Date

“This would be a good outfit to have a friend date. I have to have my dolly, because in case the friend doesn’t have any dollies to play with.”

Always good to bring your own entertainment.

OUTFIT #7: Daddy’s Little Cheerleader

She insisted that this little cheerleader outfit was the perfect choice for “going to watch Daddy play footballs!” He plays in a league and we sometimes go to watch. Looks like she’s got her outfit all picked out for next time!

OUTFIT #8: Just Because

This outfit didn’t have a set theme or place to be worn. When I asked why she chose this outfit she said, “Just because. I just like it.”

OK, then.

Through this experience, I’ve learned that I definitely need to let my daughter explore her sense of fashion more often. Her choices were pretty impressive for someone who is barely three and it was fun seeing her put together items that I would never even consider pairing together. Looks like maybe I could even take a few pointers from her!
