Lauren Conrad’s Foolproof Tips on How to Travel in Style (and Comfort) While Pregnant

From the second I found out I was pregnant for the first time, I couldn’t wait to start dressing my baby bump — dreaming of my future “pregnancy glow” and all the cute things I’d wear.

As it turned out though, my pregnancy body was not exactly what I had envisioned. It took months for me to get an actual bump; and when it eventually came, it looked more like a chubby belly with love handles. But while it can be really challenging (and sometimes discouraging) to dress your ever-changing body over those nine months, it’s possible — trust me!

Maternity clothes have come a long way in the eight years since I had my first baby. I was especially excited to see Lauren Conrad, whose line at Kohl’s has always been one of my favorites, come out with an entire maternity line. LC Lauren Conrad Maternity features some gorgeous pieces that will make any pregnant mama feel confident and look beautiful.

My friend, coincidentally also named Lauren, is expecting a baby girl — so we turned to Lauren Conrad herself for some pregnancy style advice on how to pack for a babymoon or summer vacation.

We’re taking six main pieces and turning them into six outfits that would be perfect for tossing in your suitcase for any warm weather destination.

Here’s what we’re packing:

  • 2 dresses
  • 1 pair of pants
  • 2 tops
  • 1 jacket

Add a few accessories (like sunglasses, bags, and jewelry) and three pairs of shoes (sandals, sneakers, and heels), and you can make so many outfits — for the beach, pool, fun adventures, or even a night out on the town.

Tip #1: A cool, flattering dress makes all the difference.

When it comes to being pregnant in the heat, dresses are your friend. Conrad says they’re her go-to: “I have been living in dresses,” she relays. “The weather has been pretty warm, so easy, breezy dresses have been the most comfortable for me.”

Like LC, I would wear a dress all the time during the summer months — they’re cooler, easy to throw on with a pair of sandals, and they always make me feel pulled together without any real effort.

I tried a lot of different styles during my pregnancy and found those with a fitted empire waist made me feel the most confident.

One style from Lauren’s line that we love is this super soft, off-the-shoulder chambray dress. It’s the perfect length to keep your legs from getting burned, and it has a tie at the waist to emphasize your smallest area and flatter your bump. We paired it with a neutral sandal and cute beach bag.

Tip #2: Incorporate versatile pieces that can easily transition from day to night.

The purpose of a babymoon is to really enjoy yourself before the little one arrives, so Conrad encourages all parents to make the most of their alone time — while they still have it!

“Take the time to put together some outfits you will feel beautiful (and comfortable) in,” she says. “You’ll want to enjoy this special time together, and perhaps even plan a romantic dinner or two.”

I couldn’t agree more. I’m all about TV dates on the couch in our jammies, but once the baby arrives, there won’t be as many date night opportunities, so live it up!

While I didn’t feel my best during those last few months, putting on a dress and cute shoes made me feel more beautiful and confident. It really doesn’t take much effort, especially if you invest in versatile dresses that can be easily dressed up. Take this style — we pulled up the shoulders for a little more coverage, added a pair of heeled boots, and voila! This dress goes from beach to dinner in two seconds.

Tip #3: Don’t be afraid to get creative with your styling.

Whenever my husband and I travel, we like to have a mix of relaxation and adventure. This always makes packing tricky, when you have to plan for a lot of different activities. Add a bump, and it gets even harder. But if you bring a few key items and get creative, you can make a lot of great outfits that will work for any activity you choose.

To make this pretty floral dress feel a little more casual for a day of walking and sightseeing, we pulled a simple black tee over the top and knotted it above the bump for a really flattering silhouette. To complete the look, we added some comfy sneakers, sunglasses, and a crossbody bag — perfect for holding snacks, water, and a map.

Tip #4: Use lightweight layers to transform your looks.

Even in the summer months, a good way to get the most out of your travel wardrobe is by layering. “I’ve found some really pretty lightweight layering pieces to wear over simple outfits. It’s an easy way to elevate any look,” says Conrad.

One new layer can completely transform a look, and adding a jacket to this versatile floral dress instantly changed the entire feel of the outfit. If you’re heading to a more romantic location for dinner, add a long cardigan. For something a bit more edgy, you can switch it up with a vest, denim jacket, or chunky cardigan.

Tip #5: A few good basic pieces go a long way.

As my bump grew, I found myself gravitating toward basics. These are the pieces you can wear over and over again without anyone noticing, and they’re easy to style with different accessories.

“If I am going to spend a little more on a maternity piece, it’s going to be a great basic that I know I will get a lot of mileage out of,” Conrad agrees.

Choosing a great pair of sunglasses, a chic bag, and fun jewelry all add personality to the basic jeans and tees you’ll want to wear every day.

These olive leggings look like structured jeans and pair well with this white, eyelet top. For a day of walking, or even a travel day, we styled them with neutral flat sandals, pink sunglasses, and a simple crossbody bag. The little touches, like the eyelet sleeves and lace-up front, help any pregnant mama feel feminine and pretty, all while staying comfy.

Tip #6: Only wear (and pack) what makes you feel truly confident.

Certain styles always give me a sense of confidence. So during my pregnancy, I chose these familiar pieces that made me feel pretty in my new shape.

The same goes for packing. Be sure to choose items that you know you love and feel good in so you can enjoy your time away instead of worrying about how you look.

I personally feel best in a great leather jacket and skinny jeans. So those were go-to’s during my pregnancy to feel sexy, strong, and most importantly — like myself.

One of the biggest challenges during pregnancy is adapting to your ever-changing body. For these looks, we mixed up the styles and shapes to fit my friend’s bump, but it’s important to find what works for you.

“Because your body is changing all of the time while you’re pregnant, it’s important to try lots of different shapes and silhouettes, and find out what you feel the most comfortable in. As your bump grows, your go-to styles and pieces might change, too. Try to enjoy it if you can!” Conrad advises.

With only six main pieces, we created an entire vacation wardrobe. It all starts with packing key items that are flattering and versatile — then you get to have fun by mixing and matching them!

When you incorporate these easy tips, your vacation becomes all about relaxing with your significant other and anticipating the arrival of your new bundle of joy!

These maternity pieces from LC Lauren Conrad Maternity at Kohl’s are sure to take you through your pregnancy with confidence.
