I have always loved Disney’s animated movies. The first one I saw in the theater was The Jungle Book and as an adult, I can recite every line in Tangled, Cars, and The Lion King. I remember Sunday nights when the Disney Channel would show a movie and my mother would make us popcorn and piles of blankets. So now when it’s Friday night and we settle down as a family with pizza and a movie, it always warms my heart when the Disney logo pops up on the screen.
What I love best about Disney movies are the subtle wisdom and life lessons they impart – love yourself. Be true to yourself. Be a good person and good things will happen. These are all things I wish for my son, so here are Disney Quotes of Wisdom that I want him to practice in his preschool years and beyond:
Words to live by 1 of 11
For the preschool years and beyond...
On being a hero 2 of 11
"A true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but the strength of his heart." -Hercules
There will be a time when you will be brave and daring. But remember that bravery is not always acts of physical strength, but those moments when you stand up against wrong-doing and defend your morals.
On being a nice person 3 of 11
"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." -Bambi
The truth is important, but sometimes you have to preserve the relationship. Don't say things that you know will hurt another person. If it must be said, find a way to do it kindly, with love and respect.
On being beautiful 4 of 11
"Like so many things, it is not what outside, but what is inside that counts." - Aladdin
Take pride in your appearance. Brush your teeth, comb your hair, wear good underwear in case you unexpectedly have to go to the doctor. But remember that your heart and attitude matter more than any hairstyle or piece of jewelry. By focusing on your heart, you will ensure that people fall in love with you as a person, not the outside facade.
On growing up 5 of 11
"Oh yes, the past can hurt. But the from way I see it, you can either run from it, or... learn from it." -The Lion King
Growing up means growing pains. Your heart will break, you will fall and fail. There will be disappointments in school and friendships and even yourself. The key is to learn from the past and keep moving forward.
On making friends 6 of 11
"But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you'll learn things you never knew you never knew." -Pocahontas
It is so easy to assume the rest of the world lives like you, believes like you, or thinks like you. The truth is that this world is vast and wonderful and it is best to open your mind and heart to all the differences. Don't be blinded by your own beliefs, but stretch the possibilities and in exchange, you'll grow respect for everyone.
On making decisions 7 of 11
"Always let your conscience be your guide." -Pinocchio
When it's time to make a decision, weigh all options. Write them down if you need to. But in the end, choose where your heart leads you. We only get one life, and the choices you make shape your very happiness. It's best to follow your gut.
On family 8 of 11
"Ohana means family no one gets left behind and no one is ever forgotten." -Lilo & Stitch
You get one family and we love you, from the way you imagine to the perfection of your ten fingers. We are always there for you and I hope that one day, you will have your own little family and son to say these words to. Beyond biology, surround yourself with friends that are as good as family - that love you, support your dreams, and bring light to the world.
On being patient 9 of 11
"Even miracles take some time." - Cinderella
It's hard to be patient. Oh, it is so hard! But while you may feel the tenacity to bull forward through life, remember that some of the best things in life come to those who wait. Relationships take time to nurture. New skills take time to learn. Remember that whether you're learning to ride without training wheels, or falling in love for the first time.
On being brave 10 of 11
"All the things we've seen and it's only 8 in the morning!" -Tangled
Get up! Get out! Have adventures and do all the things you dream of. Face challenges head-on - they may seem impossible, you may feel frustration. But take a deep breath, face the fears, and move forward. You are smart and strong and you can do this! p.s. get up early and don't laze the day away in bed! there is so much world to see and so little time!
On telling the truth 11 of 11
"A lie keeps growing and growing until it's as plain as the nose on your face." -Pinocchio
Be honest. Honesty takes bravery (but you've got that covered from the previous lessons!) and it is always the best policy. Admit when you make mistakes and work hard to fix them with integrity and humility. Say "I'm sorry" when you mess up and mean it. Remember that almost everything in life can be fixed except broken trust - so work hard not to break it.
