5 Reasons Holiday Travel Can Be Magical (Plus One Airline’s Viral Surprise Video)

Screen Shot 2013-12-10 at 3.06.44 PMI was reading an article the other day where someone was talking about the headache that surrounds holiday travel, and then I scratched my head. Traveling during the holidays has always been a great source of joy for myself and many families that I know. My children and I have literally bubbled over with excitement during the drive or plane ride to visit family and friends. Even if a trip to visit extended family isn’t in the forecast and you’re planning a vacation instead, there is still an extreme thrill that surrounds the preparation and execution.

So instead of whining about the upcoming holidays, I thought I’d share 5 reasons why I think traveling during the holidays is simply magical!

1. Excitement’s in the Air

As I mentioned, the overall excitement of the holidays is infectious, even if you are usually a Scrooge. The look on your children’s faces as they await the arrival to your destination is priceless and “Are we there yet?” is accompanied with squeals and a high pitched tone rather than the usual moan and groan.

2. Holiday Sights & Sounds Make for a Festive Atmosphere

Christmas trees, jingle bells, holiday music and snowflakes can be found everywhere, whether you’re visiting a Caribbean destination or somewhere more frigid. Everywhere you go, you’ll find islands, hotels and resorts dressed up for the holidays. Last year, my family and I were visiting Tortola, British Virgin Islands just a few weeks before the holidays, and their trees were decorated with festive balls and other holiday decor.

3. People Are Kinder

I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but most people are overly kind during the holiday seasons. Some who are usually  miserable suddenly get a second wind and become the nicest people in the world. If only that could translate past December 25th … but that’s for another post.

4. Holiday Travel Brings Families Together

Family reunions are special and can make you feel warm and fuzzy all over, especially if you have children who are visiting or meeting some of these relatives for the very first time.

5. Christmas Magic!

Call it the Christmas spirit, or simply the magic of the holidays, but there is certainly an overall vibe everywhere you go that just screams happy. Whether you’re traveling, shopping at the mall, or running errands, there is a feeling of joy that is just too beautiful for words. Emotions run high, kindness is rampant and magic happens. Speaking of which…watch the video below (in which airline WestJet makes Christmas magic happen) for a real treat, but have a tissue handy. I’ve watched it 5 times and each time I’ve bawled like a baby.[videopost src=’’]
