Use Your Phone During a Flight With Gogo’s In-Flight Talk & Text

Ever wish you could use your phone during a flight? Travelers are about to get even more connected while on-the-go thanks to Gogo.

Most people are familiar with Gogo, the leading provider of in-flight internet access. It’s one of the main reasons why I prefer to fly with Delta Airlines, as most of their flights offer this service. Starting October 1st, Gogo will be expanding their services to include voice. Yes, you read that right! Starting October 1st, you will now be able to make phone calls and text while traveling by plane. How cool is that? The service operates on Aircell’s air-to-ground technology and Gogo claims that any phone calls made through their system are the clearest in aviation, in fact they go so far as to claim that they are on par with mobile phone calls made on the ground!

The new Gogo Biz service will offer both voice and internet service on one system and plans will start at $134.95 per month (includes 60 voice minutes). The Gogo Text & Talk will be available for iPhone 4, 4S and 5 starting October 1st. Android devices will also be able to use the service starting November 1st.

An additional service from Gogo is the Gogo OnePhone. Airlines will now have the option to add cabin headsets to their aircraft. These phones offer an advanced noise reduction technology and a touchscreen display. I’m curious to see whether airlines end up purchasing these sets. On one hand, I think it’s a good thing that we will be able to text during our flights, however I wonder if the access to our phones will increase noise levels in the cabin. Flights allow me to catch up with work or read a book. But then again, we’ll always have those wonderful noise-cancelling headphones to block out the noise.
