Why Wait til Oct. 31? Mickey’s Halloween Party on NOW at Disneyland!

Mickey'sHalloweenLast Halloween, my daughter Emma and I found ourselves in an unusual pickle: My older daughter, Eve, was away at school in Georgia, and my wife, Cassie, was going to be out of town on a business trip. For the first time ever, Emma and I would be by ourselves on Halloween.

It seemed weird to go trick-or-treating without the other half of our family, so we decided to do something completely different to make the day a special daddy/daughter event. We headed to one of our favorite destinations — Disneyland — and bought tickets for Mickey’s Halloween Party.

We both wore costumes for the occasion. Emma went as Snow White I think this was her sixth different princess in a row and I went as Russell from Up. We arrived at Disneyland early and went on a few rides together before the party started (admission to the park three hours early is one of the perks of the party). We bought some popcorn in a special Mickey ghost bucket, took pictures in front of the Halloween tree, and went on both Haunted Mansion Holiday and Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy. After all that, it was time to get the party started!

mickey'shalloweenAs everyone else filed out of the park, we party-goers got to stay in. Emma and I quickly headed to our first trick-or-treat station. With typical neighborhood trick-or-treating, it’s a kids’-only activity; at Disneyland, everyone gets to participate. I was surprised at how great the candy was, and the fact that they often had a healthy option — usually apple slices and carrots — for those who wanted it. I confess, I bypassed the fruit and went right for the chocolate. Very quickly we filled up two and a half bags! Here’s a tip: Bring a backpack to cart around your candy “treasure.” You’ll need it.

Our “something different for Halloween” turned out to be the most fun we’ve ever had on the holiday. Emma and I had such a great time, we’re going again this year! I think I’ll dress up as Nerd Mickey this year kind of a tribute to my Disney Nerd blog. Will Emma go for a record seven princesses in a row, or will she do something completely different? I can’t wait to find out!
